Edward Allen Hartel A memorial Mass will be held September 18, 1999 for 72-year-old Edward Allen Hartel of Perryville, who died Saturday, August 28th, 1999 at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born November 10th, 1926 in LaSalle, Illinois, the son of Edward Anthony and Olivia Helen (Pohlig) Hartel who both preceded in death. He married Geraldine "Gerry" S. Schue on July 27th, 1963. She survives in Perryville. An aunt also survives him: Marie Pohlig of Wentzville and numerous cousins. He graduated from Jackson High School in May 1944 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy for two years during World War II and served until honorably discharged in July 1946. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State College in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education, with majors in physical education, social studies and a minor in history. From 1950 to 1953 he taught social studies, health, science and was an assistant coach in football, basketball and track at Portageville Public Schools. In the fall of 1953, Hartel began what would be a 27-year career with Perry County School District No. 32. During his career in Perryville, Hartel was employed in various capacities, including coach of football, basketball and baseball; a teacher for boys and girls physical education and social studies; athletic director; junior high school principal and high school assistant principal. During the summer of 1951 he attended the University of Wyoming. During the summers of 1954, 1955 and 1956, he attended George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn. where he earned a Masters of Arts degree with a major in physical education and minor in secondary administration. He attended the University of Missouri in Columbia in the summer of 1957. Hartel held office in every athletic conference in which Perryville High School competed and offices in the Southeast Missouri Principal's Association and he spent six years on the advisory board for the Missouri State High School Activities Association. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1263, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly, American Legion Post 133, Holy Name Society, Secondary Principal's Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Missouri State Teacher's Association, Missouri State Principal's Association, Southeast Missouri Principal's Association and Perry County Teachers' Association. He served as past president and vice president for a number of local principal and athletic associations. He was a past member of the National Education Association, National Secondary Principals' Association and Perryville Elks and Lions Club. A memorial Mass for 72-year-old Edward Allen Hartel of Perryville will be held Saturday, September 18, 1999 at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to any local educational institution or church of your choice. Young and Sons Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. |
