Leander L. "Chic" Buchheit

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002 for 88-year-old Leander L. Buchheit of Old Appleton who died Tuesday, Dec. 3 at Perry County Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 19, 1914 in Old Appleton, the son of the late Leo M. and Anna W. Ponder Buchheit.

He was married to Loraine A. Wibbenmeyer on Nov. 25, 1937. She survives in Old Appleton.

Two children survive: Kenneth L. Buchheit of Old Appleton, and Eileen F. Christian of St. Louis.

Four brothers and three sisters survive: Ervin (Speed) Buchheit and Herbert Buchheit, both of Perryville; Linus (Sonny) Buchheit of Washintgon, IN.; Martin (Pepper) of St. Louis; Olivia Amschler and Theresa Wibbenmeyer , both of Old Appleton; and Elfrieda Sutterer of Perryville.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Kyle, Margaret and Kevin of Old Appleton; David Christian of Chicago, Ill.; and Christopher of Jackson. Five great grandchildren also survive.

Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Buchheit co-owned and operated the Appleton Mercantile Company, Old Appleton from 1946 to 1982. He also served as the Postmaster of the Old Appleton Post Office from 1971 to 1992. Mr. Buchheit served on the Town Board of Old Appleton, the Bridge Restoration committee, the St. Joseph Shrine Committee, and was a member of the Mens Club of St. Joseph and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Apple Creek.

Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 at the Miller Family Funeral Home. Parish wake service will be at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will also be from 6:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. The rosary will be recited at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Funeral Mass for Leander L. Buchheit will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Apple Creek. Rev. Mark Bozada will officiate. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Apple Creek.
