Steven Howard Evans

A funeral was held Saturday, February 24th, for 38-year-old Steven Howard Evans of Jackson, formerly of Perryville, who died Monday, February 19th, at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, following complications from a heart transplant.

He was born May 15, 1968, in Kirksville, the son of James H. and Cathryn Phillips Evans. He graduated with the Class of 1986 at Gideon High School in Gideon. He was active in Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was a member of Order of the Arrow.

He served in the U.S. Army in Germany with the 95th Military Police Company. He was assigned as personal bodyguard to General Louie, Supreme Commander of NATO Forces in Western Europe.

While on leave, he provided superior aid, rescue and recovery at the Ramstein Air Show disaster in 1988 and received Army Commendations for his efforts.

After leaving the military Steve became a police officer with the city of Perryville. He became owner/operator of Port-A-Wash and Southeast Manufacturing. He was a deputy sheriff with the Perry County Sheriff's Department, and did contract bidding for Loyd Slinkard Painting Co. Inc. until disability forced him to retire.

He was a member of the Methodist Church of Gideon.

He is survived by his parents, James and Cathryn Evans of Jackson; a son, Brock Evans and his mother, Cheri Harris of Jackson, a daughter and son, Whitley and Gavin Evans and their mother Marylyn Evans of Jackson; a sister and brother-in-law, Stacy and Bryan McCain and their daughter, Kayla, who called him "Uncle Teve," of Jackson; his fiancee, Crystal Cambron of Jackson; paternal grandmother, Leotta Evans of Hannibal; maternal grandmother, Irene Phillips of Mendon, Illinois; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Virgil Robert Evans, Etta Maxine Evans and Bonnie Evans; maternal grandfather Lewis E. Phillips; a nephew, Blake William McCain; and cousin, Lori Evans Schneider.

A funeral for 38-year-old Steve Howard Evans of Jackson, formerly of Perryville, was held Saturday. He was buried this morning with full military honors by the Missouri Honor Guard at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
